Mississippi Street Fair

Seeing people shoulder to shoulder from N Skidmore to N Fremont was quite a sight. One I’m not sure I was expecting. As an event photographer weekends are usually spoken for. As such, this was my first Mississippi Street fair. Sigh. I was expecting to see unicorns and boys with tee shirts and hair colored the same shade of grass green however. Amnesia brew pub was a packed madhouse of people sanely wanting a cold pint on such a bright warm day; which I also expected. The staff was on top of it-bringing in stacks of glasses practically a person high-and pouring fast and friendly for a seemingly...

Danny Mendelsohn’s Bar Mitzvah

The speech Danny prepared for becoming bar mitzvah was thoughtful and inspiring. As I was photographing an excited Danny and his proud family preparing for the service I had an opportunity to hear him speak about knowing gratitude. To listen to a newly minted teenager talk on such a perceptive level about being grateful for family, community, and life experiences-be they good or difficult-was humbling. It was also a graceful reminder to be thankful for the people, events, and things in my life. Of course, I’m always grateful when I have a camera in hand! At Portland Art Museum’s renowned...

Dalya Meyer’s Bat Mitzvah

Dalya could not have asked for a more perfect June day for her bat mitzvah celebration. Besides the perfect temperature, low humidity, fluffy clouds in the blue sky kind of day the morning was clearing up to be, when I arrived at Neveh Shalom… did I smell cookies?! I had been told that baking has been part of the celebrations here for some time, with family recipes that have been made (and looked forward to) for generations. So I followed the delicious, warm scent downstairs…well, don’t those look yummy? Dalya’s parents had big, proud smiles during rehearsal–beaming,...

Kenton Street Fair

When I moved into this neighborhood about a year and a half ago, it became readily apparent how close knit (literally-check out the bike post knitting bombs that line N Denver Ave) the Kenton community is. After attending some great third Thursday gatherings last summer at the Bamboo Craftsman Company and Salvage Works-plus free tastings at Lilac Wines-it was also a delight to discover that the Kenton neighborhood knows how to have a good time. The Kenton Street Fair was a rocking, colorful, and tasty good time. Roller Derby girls kicked it off by bombing down N Denver. I kicked it off with coffee...

Jonah Zigman’s Bar Mitzvah

Q.How much fun can you have at Jonah Zigman’s Bar Mitzvah? A.The sky’s the limit! Jonah’s international travel themed party at the Nines had an all access VIP pass to fun. International food buffets, Voodoo donuts, an airplane shaped candy “bar” and a colorful (crazy straw required!) non-adult beverage lounge were on the in flight menu. The featured movie was a slide show retrospective of the awesome things Jonah does: snow sports, water sports… hey-wait-did I see him skydive and race dolphins too? I’m not sure-but I did find out that a lot of the film’s...
